Community Group Talksheet

This Community Group Talk Sheet is designed to help your group move from simply hearing a message to genuinely living it out. Each section will guide you to reflect on Scripture, process the sermon together, and consider practical next steps in everyday life.

Use this resource to:

  • Spark meaningful conversation that goes deeper than surface-level answers.

  • Connect the truths of God’s character and His promises to real situations you’re facing.

  • Identify concrete actions you can take in response—individually and as a group.

Whether you’re in a living room, a classroom, or gathered online, this guide exists to equip your group to listen to God, encourage one another, and follow Jesus more faithfully throughout the week.

Warning the Wealthy

Start the Conversation

What’s one thing you used to REALLY wanted that now sits in a closet, drawer, or garage?

Read James 5:1-6

  • What word or phrase stands out to you the most from this passage, and why?

We are rich???

  • How does realizing that many Americans are among the wealthiest people in the world change how you hear this passage?

  • How does comparing ourselves to the “rung above us” instead of the “rungs below us”—locally and globally—shape our view of whether we’re rich?

  • Where do you personally feel the pull of “newer and nicer” (gadgets, house, clothes, vacations, kids’ activities, etc.)? How has that pursuit disappointed you in the past?

  • How would you put in your own words the difference between wise saving and selfish hoarding? (Think less about the amount and more about the attitude and purpose.)

Read Micah 6:8

  • Even if we don’t personally employ workers, how might we still be indirectly involved in systems that exploit people (cheap clothes, cheap products, unfair wages, housing, etc.)?

  • The sermon mentioned our tendency to practice willful ignorance about injustice. Where do you feel tempted to “not look too closely” because it might cost you convenience, money, or comfort?

  • Micah 6:8 calls us to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly.” Which of those three feels most challenging to you right now, and why?

Read Philippians 2:3-8

  • How does remembering God’s generosity in the gospel (Jesus becoming poor so we could become rich in Him) keep this from being just a guilt trip about money?

Practical Application

The message gave us three practical responses:

  1. Remember that everything belongs to God

  2. Build foundations of gratitude and contentment

  3. Find opportunities to be generous

  • Which of these three responses feels most relevant or challenging for you right now?

Prayer Requests and Time of Prayer

  • Confess times when you have loved money more than Christ

  • Ask God to soften our hearts toward injustice

  • Ask God for a desire to be generous and compassionate

  • Thank Jesus for His radical generosity shown to us
